Job Description

Role Purpose

Responsible for the overall technical leadership in a product team / department, devising the strategy for growth and supervising a team of engineers as they develop, test, modify, and create solutions to technical problems. As such this role’s aim is to ensure we deliver software of good quality, maintainable, delivered on time and following all the processes involved in the software creation and delivery (SDLC, invoicing, performance management, etc.).

This role doesn’t work alone, but in coordination with other managers (product management, support, CEM, sales, other product teams, …) to ensure an efficient usage of the technical resources, our adherence to standards (quality, maintainability, supportability, adequate TCO of the solutions…).

Other technical and non-technical roles to be agreed depending on the team / department

Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Leads strategic organizational decisions and plans. Consistently works at a strategic level, influencing decisions to achieve organizational alignment on major goals.
  • Actively seeks to create or redefine roadmaps with product / business counterparts.
  • Takes ownership of decisions made in the engineering team by helping members make clear decisions in alignment with organizational goals, backing decisions made, and taking responsibility for their success.
  • Identifies dependencies across the organization and works with individual teams to resolve them before they become an issue.
  • Works across the organization to foster a culture of risk handling, priority setting and urgency in alignment with organizational strategy.
  • Helps balance speed and quality to manage technical debt, in coordination with product and business stakeholders.
  • Implement and drive a continuous improvement culture, identifying where improvements can be made via automation, in work processes and tools.

Team efficiency

  • Fosters a culture of delivering praise and constructive feedback across the team.
  • Make use of data to drive decisions in improving team efficiency. Approaches include skill development, organizational standards, processes, automation, and tools.
  • Accountable for the objective setting & performance reviews for the technical team, including
  • Compensation adjustments (bonus, raises, etc)
  • Promotions and Performance improvement plans
  • 1-on-1’s with your direct reports & skip level 1-on-1’s with certain reports of your reports
  • Career development of the team
  • Develops strategies to promote team leaders and members adherence to company regulations and performance goals
  • Recruitment – You will need to work with HR to create job postings, screen resumes, interview candidates, etc.\\
  • Responsible for maintaining headcount and expenditure within the agreed department levels.
  • Makes sure the members of the team have all the equipment needed to perform their duties efficiently.

Communication

  • Connect employees to the company
  • Voice of the team, and as such needs to communicate:
  • Up – Communicating status of your team up to Product Heads
  • Across – Communicating with peers and other functional groups across the organization
  • Down – Communicating news, decision making to your team

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills Set And Experience Required (Mandatory)

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree or equivalent in Engineering.
  • 12 – 18 years’ Industry experience.
  • Experience leading technology teams and performing activities such as architecture, design, code reviews.
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams including US/European based stakeholders.
  • Hands-on capability in software architecture, design and development.
  • Extensive application development experience in one or more of the following: Microsoft .Net, C#, Java, python or similar.
  • Experience with building highly scalable and highly available enterprise applications.
  • Experience with Greenfield (brand new) product builds
  • Agile software development experience.
  • Risk analysis and risk management skills.
  • Sets measurable goals and meets them.
  • Internal and external client-focused attitude with excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal; Ability to present to senior-level audience.
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills to work with all levels of organization and must be self-motivated

Desirable Skill Set Required (Add-on)

  • Prior experience hiring and setting up multiple teams
  • Experience in one or more of the following: AWS stack, Sharepoint, JIRA, GIT, TFS, JS, Search Engines (solr, elastic search, FAST) and SQL Server
  • Insurance knowledge is preferred, but not a must.
