Let’s start with a stat. 65% of people have bought a beauty product in the last 3 months that they regret. Even though they read reviews, and watched hours and hours of Youtube and Instagram reels before buying.
And another stat—24% of all complaints made to the Advertising Standards Council of India during Covid years were against beauty brands for misleading advertising. The trend remained the same in the last 2 years.
So we spoke to people. Lots and lots of people who buy beauty products. After 836 conversations and three months of correlation-causation-analysis-paralysis (yes, we love our stats), we realised this: most people still prefer shopping offline, stick to their usual favourites, rely on a friend who might have a completely different skin tone, skin type, age, gender, climate, or lifestyle—or they just pretend they don’t care about better skin or hair (mostly men, by the way, even though the Male grooming market is >$2.1B)
After a few pilots, we figured we could build something to fix this. That answer is Honestly. And while we know we have a long way to go, we’re starting with something super simple: we’re improving search and recommendations. Instead of reducing a query like 'sunscreen that won’t leave a white cast and make my skin oily in Bali next week' to something generic like 'sunscreen for oily skin,' our approach goes deeper. Plus, traditional search engines index on brand claims, keywords, and recommend 'Bestsellers' or 'Sponsored' products over high relevance.
About the Stage
We're pre-revenue, which means pre-PMF, but already have strong usage and retention on our MVP. Every couple of weeks we're launching improvements, with one of the biggest improvements coming up by early July. As a Head of Product Marketing, you will be our first growth hire, and will have the autonomy + responsibility to get Honestly to its first 100K users.
What you'll do
A. Build and run Content & Product-Led Growth Engines
- Create and launch high-impact content and product-driven campaigns (think: viral explainers, community challenges, shareable product reviews).
- Leverage AI tools to scale and personalize content, onboarding, and growth loops.
- Own end-to-end execution: from idea to analytics, for every growth experiment.
B. Tell Honestly’s story authentically, everywhere
- Actively engage with early users, creators, and communities to turn them into advocates.
- Translate Honestly’s unique POV into standout content across channels (social, influencer, email, product UI, etc.)
- Contribute to the Product vision and roadmap
C. Build out and scale the team as we grow.
What you'll need
- 2+ years of growth or product marketing manager experience
- 4+ years in a consumer-tech startup
- Experience in the 0 to 1 stage is a plus
- Interest in beauty and personal care as a category. You may not be a die-hard skincare junkie who knows their niacinamides from ceramides, but you do care about the shampoo or soap you use
