Vice President of Risk Management

Summary/Objective: The Vice President of Risk Management is responsible for leading risk management strategies and capital improvement planning across Paths' national portfolio. This executive role plays a vital part in identifying, assessing, and mitigating operational risks while overseeing insurance programs and claims management. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the VP will collaborate closely with legal, operations, and finance teams to drive organizational excellence. This position is also critical in strategically supporting Paths' portfolio operations, including Development, Construction, and Reliant Safety, to effectively manage the complexity of risk and liability across the enterprise. This role will report to the General Counsel.

Essential function/responsibilities: duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Design, negotiate, and manage comprehensive insurance programs, including property, liability, fleet, equipment breakdown, umbrella, fidelity, and cybersecurity coverage.
- Manage new insurance coverage for property acquisitions and future development projects.
- Oversee underwriting processes and ensure appropriate coverage levels and risk exposure with competitive premiums.
- Manage insurance renewals, escrow analysis, and premium payments.
- Review insurance certificates at property closings, conversions, and renewals.
- Direct all insurance claims and litigation matters, coordinating with internal and external counsel, insurers, and internal property and corporate teams to ensure timely resolution with favorable results.
- Implement and oversee post-loss strategies including salvage, subrogation, and rehabilitation.
- Analyze claims data for reporting, forecasting, and trend identification.
- Develop, implement, and maintain risk management policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, HUD, Fair Housing).
- Conduct regular risk assessments, property inspections, and internal audits.
- Conduct regular property tours with brokers and insurance carriers and inspections of units under repair.
- Review contracts, leases, and legal documents for risk exposure.
- Advise on risk transfer mechanisms, indemnification clauses, and insurance requirements.
- Lead loss control initiatives and safety programs to increase staff awareness, to reduce risk exposure.
- Collaborate with property management and RMS maintenance teams to enforce best practices.
- Oversee risk-related project management for units undergoing repairs due to fire, flood, or other damages.
- Coordinate with construction, insurance, and legal teams to ensure timely restoration and risk mitigation.
- Develop and implement cybersecurity risk strategies and liability coverage.
- Provide regular risk assessments and strategic updates to the General Counsel and executive leadership.
- Prepare and present reports on claims trends, litigation status, insurance performance, and risk exposure.
- Identify and implement process improvements and innovative technologies to enhance risk management operations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on risk-related matters.
- Build and maintain relationships with brokers, insurers, TPAs, vendors, contractors, and consultants.
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA or advanced degree in Risk Management or related field preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in risk management, preferably in affordable housing or real estate.
- Strong knowledge of insurance markets, claims handling, litigation management, and contract law.
- Demonstrated experience in policy development, project management, and cross-functional leadership.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Deep connections with and knowledge of brokers, insurance carriers and others industry participants.
- Preferred Certifications: ARM (Associate in Risk Management), CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), RIMS-CRMP (Certified Risk Management Professional).
