2. TBM Tunnel Construction Quality Control

  • Quality Planning & Documentation
  • Implement the Project Quality Plan, ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans), Method Statements, and Checklists specific to tunnel construction.
  • Ensure all tunneling activities comply with project specifications, drawings, codes (IS, BS, ACI, EN), and client/consultant requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date revision control for all quality documents.

(Applicable for shield/EPB/TBM tunneling projects)

  • Inspect and verify:
    • TBM assembly & daily pre?launch checks
    • Cutterhead tools, disc cutters, scrapers, brushes
    • Main drive torque, pressure levels, and system parameters
    • Slurry/EPB conditioning materials and their dosing
    • TBM advance sequence, thrust forces, and ring build parameters
  • Monitor segment installation, grout injection, and annular gap filling quality.
  • Ensure correct segment type, orientation, gasket condition, and bolt torquing.
  • Check for segment damage, joint opening, spalling, honeycombing, or misalignment.
  • Precast Segment Quality Control
  • Inspect segment delivery, handling, and storage at the tunnel portal/launching shaft.
  • Check segment dimensions, surface finish, gasket alignment, lifting points, and embedded items.
  • Verify segment traceability (batch number, production date, ring ID).

  • Material Testing & Verification
  • Conduct/monitor routine testing:
    • Concrete slump & compressive strength
    • Shotcrete rebound, thickness, core tests
    • Grout pressure, density, viscosity
    • Rock bolt pull-out tests
  • Ensure all materials have valid MTCs, approvals, and compliance certificates.
  • Verify excavation profiles using total station/laser scanning.
  • Check TBM guidance system readings and ring alignment.
  • Confirm tunnel geometry within tolerance (convergence, clearance, grade, alignment).
  • Identify, report, and record any Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
  • Coordinate with construction teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Verify rectification works and close NCRs with proper documentation.
  • Prepare:
    • Daily QA/QC reports
    • Checklists and inspection reports
    • Test reports
    • Tunnel segment installation records
    • Grouting logs & as-built documentation
  • Maintain systematic filing for audits and client verification.
  • Ensure compliance with tunnel safety standards (confined space, ventilation, gas detection).
  • Verify certification of lifting equipment used for precast segments.
  • Support HSE team in incident investigation involving quality issues.
  • Interface with:
    • Client/consultant QA/QC teams
    • TBM manufacturer representatives
    • Survey, material testing lab, and construction teams
  • Attend quality meetings and represent QA/QC department.
