Job Description
Job Summary:
The Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations at construction sites. The role focuses on implementing safety systems, preventing accidents, and fostering a safety-first culture in line with statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement site-specific safety plans in accordance with Indian laws
- Ensure compliance with Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996
- Adhere to provisions under Factories Act, 1948 (where applicable to site operations/workshops)
- Ensure compliance with Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 for contractor workforce management
- Implement guidelines under National Building Code of India 2016 for construction safety practices
- Conduct Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
- Carry out regular safety inspections, audits, and compliance checks
- Investigate accidents, dangerous occurrences, and near-misses; report as per statutory norms
- Ensure proper usage and availability of PPE (helmets, harnesses, safety shoes, etc.)
- Conduct safety inductions, toolbox talks, and periodic training for workers and staff
- Maintain statutory registers, records, and documentation for inspections by authorities
- Liaise with government bodies such as Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) and labour departments
- Ensure emergency preparedness including fire safety, evacuation drills, and first aid readiness
- Monitor work at height, excavation, lifting operations, and electrical safety
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Occupational Health & Safety / Industrial Safety
- Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety (recognized by State Technical Board or equivalent)
- Certifications such as NEBOSH IGC / IOSH Managing Safely (preferred)
Experience:
- 10 -15 years of experience in construction safety (infrastructure, buildings, industrial projects)
- Experience handling large manpower and multiple contractors
Key Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Indian labour laws and safety regulations
- Risk assessment (HIRA, JSA) and incident investigation
- Safety auditing and compliance management
- Leadership and team coordination
- Communication skills (Hindi & English; regional language is a plus)
Working Conditions:
- Site-based role with exposure to outdoor environments
- Work may involve heights, heavy machinery zones, and dynamic site conditions
- Flexible hours depending on project schedules
