This is an exciting opportunity to make a tangible and high-impact contribution to performance improvement, patient flow, service redesign and the delivery of the 4-hour Emergency Access Standard across the whole system.

You will lead day-to-day service delivery, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient operational performance across all front-door pathways. Working closely with senior clinicians, nursing leadership, and multidisciplinary teams, you will drive system-wide improvements, streamline patient flow, and support redesign initiatives essential to reducing delays and improving outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead operational delivery of urgent and unscheduled care services, ensuring high-quality, safe, patient-centred care.
  • Support delivery of the 4-hour Emergency Access Standard through whole-system collaboration.
  • Oversee operational performance, demand and capacity planning, escalation processes, and risk management.
  • Lead development and implementation of enhanced AAU and MAU models to support effective patient flow.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, service redesign, and workforce sustainability initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, staff engagement, and collaborative working across all disciplines.
  • Ensure robust governance, compliance, and reporting arrangements are in place.

About You

We are looking for a motivated and resilient leader who can work at pace in a complex and high-pressure environment. You will bring:

  • Proven operational management experience in acute hospital settings (urgent care experience desirable but not essential).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and influencing skills.
  • A track record of delivering service improvements and measurable performance outcomes.
  • Ability to navigate competing priorities and support rapid decision-making.
  • A collaborative approach with a commitment to multidisciplinary working.

Applications are welcomed from registered and non-registered professionals with significant operational management experience in acute healthcare.

To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service.

As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre-settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, please refer to the GOV.UK website here.

For specific types of post, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible (though not guaranteed) to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licenced Sponsor, and if the post does not fall below the current minimum salary threshold or ‘going rate’. Further information on these criteria can be found here.

It is ESSENTIAL that you have checked that you either already have an appropriate right to work in the UK or that the post would be eligible to be sponsored BEFORE submitting your application form

AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be great for planning and preparing your application—but your answers must be your own.

  • Show us the real you: Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.
  • Use AI wisely: It’s fine to use AI for ideas or to check spelling and grammar, but don’t let it write your answers.
