Job Description - SAP BTP Developer

Position Title SAP BTP Developer

Location Onsite / Remote / Hybrid based on project requirements

Employment Type Contract / Full-Time

Travel This position may require travel up to 80% based on project phase, deployment needs, design workshops, testing, cutover, and hypercare. Preferred location: East Coast or Midwest.

Role Overview

This role is aligned to a large global SAP S/4HANA transformation program delivered using SAP Activate, a Greenfield+ implementation approach, SAP S/4HANA RISE PCE, Fit-to-Standard principles, and a Clean Core delivery model. The role is expected to support formal design, build, test, deploy, cutover, hypercare, and knowledge transfer activities across a multi-wave enterprise implementation. The position requires strong documentation discipline, close collaboration with functional and technical workstreams, and the ability to operate within structured governance, change control, validation, and deliverable approval processes.

The SAP BTP Developer will design, build, test, deploy, and support SAP Business Technology Platform-based applications, services, workflows, APIs, and extensions for a global SAP S/4HANA transformation program. The role will focus on side-by-side extensibility and clean-core aligned solutions that complement SAP S/4HANA without modifying the core. The developer will collaborate with SAP S/4HANA technical developers, Fiori developers, integration developers, solution architects, functional teams, security teams, and testing teams to deliver secure, scalable, and reusable BTP solutions. The candidate must understand how SAP BTP fits into the broader extensibility strategy across Key User Extensibility, Developer Extensibility, RAP-based services, and side-by-side extensions.

Day to Day Job Duties

The selected resource will be expected to perform the following activities on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the project phase:

  • Design and develop SAP BTP side-by-side extensions that support approved business process gaps while preserving clean-core architecture.
  • Collaborate with SAP S/4HANA technical teams and architects to determine whether requirements should be fulfilled using standard SAP functionality, Key User Extensibility, Developer Extensibility, RAP-based service exposure, or SAP BTP side-by-side extensibility.
  • Develop BTP applications, services, APIs, workflows, and integration components using approved enterprise architecture patterns.
  • Consume SAP S/4HANA released APIs, CDS-based services, OData services, RAP services, and business events in BTP applications and extensions.
  • Support workflow orchestration for cross-system or exception-based approval processes where SAP Flexible Workflow is not sufficient.
  • Configure and support BTP connectivity, destinations, authentication, authorization, role collections, secure communication, and environment-specific deployment needs.
  • Work with Fiori/UI5 teams to integrate BTP applications with SAP Fiori Launchpad, role-based navigation, and user experience standards.
  • Work with Integration Suite developers to align APIs, integration flows, event-driven patterns, and connectivity to SAP and non-SAP systems.
  • Prepare technical specifications, design documents, unit test evidence, deployment documents, support guides, and knowledge transfer material.
  • Support SIT, UAT, regression testing, performance testing, cutover, go-live, hypercare, and handover to support/COE teams.

Basic Qualifications

The following skills and experience are required for this role:

  • SAP BTP Development: 6-10 years of overall SAP technical or cloud development experience, including 3-5 years of hands-on SAP BTP development experience.
  • Implementation Experience: Experience in at least one or two SAP S/4HANA implementation or transformation programs where SAP BTP was used for application development, workflow, APIs, integration, or extensibility.
  • BTP Services: Hands-on experience with SAP BTP application development, connectivity, destinations, authentication, authorization, role collections, and deployment concepts.
  • Extensibility Strategy: Strong understanding of Key User Extensibility, Developer Extensibility, RAP-based service exposure, and BTP side-by-side extensibility.
  • Clean Core: Ability to design BTP extensions that preserve the SAP S/4HANA core and use released APIs, events, and services where applicable.
  • Workflow: Experience with SAP BTP Workflow or equivalent workflow/orchestration capabilities for cross-application business processes.
  • Integration: Understanding of REST, OData, APIs, event-driven patterns, SAP Integration Suite, and secure connectivity between SAP and non-SAP applications.
  • Fiori Integration: Experience integrating BTP applications with SAP Fiori Launchpad and role-based user access.
  • Testing and Deployment: Experience supporting unit testing, SIT, UAT, deployment, cutover, hypercare, and operational support transition.
  • Documentation: Strong ability to prepare technical specifications, deployment documentation, unit test results, and KT materials.

Common Project Delivery Expectations

  • Work effectively with functional consultants, solution architects, PMO, testing teams, integration teams, security teams, data teams, business SMEs, offshore delivery teams, and support/COE stakeholders.
  • Follow SAP best practices, Fit-to-Standard guidance, Clean Core principles, and approved change control procedures before introducing custom development or extensions.
  • Create clear, audit-ready documentation including design documents, technical specifications, unit test evidence, defect resolution notes, deployment notes, runbooks, and knowledge transfer materials.
  • Support SIT1, SIT2, UAT, regression testing, security testing, performance testing, cutover rehearsals, production cutover, hypercare stabilization, and transition to long-term support.
  • Use SAP Cloud ALM and related project tools for test execution support, defect tracking, issue updates, documentation references, and delivery traceability where applicable.
  • Support GxP/CSV-aware delivery expectations where applicable, including traceability, validation support, controlled testing, and documentation aligned to formal approval processes.

Nice to Have

The following experience is preferred but not mandatory:

  • Experience with SAP CAP, RAP awareness, SAP Build, SAP Work Zone, SAP Event Mesh, SAP HANA Cloud, or SAP API Management.
  • Experience in regulated environments requiring validation, traceability, and audit-ready documentation.
  • Exposure to GxP/CSV, GAMP 5, CSA, IQ/OQ/PQ, and requirements traceability.
  • Experience with SAP Cloud ALM, Tricentis, SuccessFactors, Ariba, Datasphere, SAC, SimpleMDG, or global multi-wave deployments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory/ADFS-based SSO environments is a plus.

Degree

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business Systems, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on SAP project experience may be considered.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong ownership mindset and ability to drive assigned deliverables from design through hypercare.
  • Ability to work in a global delivery model across onsite, offshore, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical topics to functional and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to work within formal governance, documentation, validation, change control, and deliverable acceptance processes.
  • Ability to prepare clear KT materials and support transition to application support or SAP Center of Excellence teams.
