Quality Assurance Engineer

About hoichoi

hoichoi is India's leading Bengali OTT platform — the digital arm of SVF, Eastern India's largest media & entertainment company. We stream 650+ Bengali movies, 185+ originals, and 3000+ hours of content to a global audience of ~250 million Bengalis across India, Bangladesh, and 100+ countries. We're part of a wider ecosystem alongside Sooper (AI-led micro-drama OTT) and LoglineAI (AI-native creative studio), and we're on a mission to entertain everyone in their native language.

The Opportunity

We're hiring a QA Engineer to own quality across a streaming product used by millions of viewers daily. You'll sit inside the tech team, reporting to Product, and work directly with Engineering and Design to test features end-to-end — across web, mobile, smart TV apps, and backend APIs — before they reach real users.

This is not a click-through-a-checklist role. Streaming QA is genuinely hard: playback breaks differently on a Tizen TV than on an iPhone, DRM fails silently, a payment flow that works in India fails in Bangladesh, and a broken analytics event can hide a revenue leak for weeks. We want someone who understands that, has done it before, and has opinions about how to do it better.

What You'll Do :

Core testing

  • Write and execute clear, thorough test cases for new features and bug fixes across web, mobile apps (Android/iOS), smart TV apps (Samsung Tizen, Android TV/Sony, Roku, LG webOS, VIDAA/Hisense, Apple TV), and backend APIs.
  • Run functional, regression, exploratory, and smoke passes ahead of every release — including on physical TV hardware with remote-control (D-pad) navigation.
  • Own and maintain the device/OS/app-version test matrix, prioritised by our actual user distribution rather than by gut feel.
  • Log, triage, and track defects in Linear with clean steps to reproduce, severity, and evidence — through to resolution.

Playback & DRM

  • Validate DRM playback across Widevine, FairPlay, and PlayReady on every platform.
  • Test ABR bitrate switching, startup latency, rebuffering, seek/resume, and watch-history sync across devices.
  • QA subtitles and multi-audio tracks, including Bengali text rendering across TV fonts and locales.
  • Test Chromecast/AirPlay, offline downloads, and concurrent-stream/device-limit enforcement.

Payments & subscriptions

  • Test the full subscription lifecycle: purchase, renewal, cancellation, refund, upgrade/downgrade, grace period, and dunning.
  • Validate payment rails end-to-end — Apple IAP and Google Play Billing sandboxes, Juspay, UPI/QR (Android TV), bKash, and carrier billing.
  • Verify multi-currency pricing and per-geo plan availability.

Geo & multi-market

  • Run market-specific regression passes for India, Bangladesh, and Rest of World — different catalogues, plans, and payment methods.
  • Test geo-restriction and VPN behaviour, and validate content availability windows.

Release & rollout

  • Manage QA across release channels: TestFlight, Play internal/closed tracks, Roku beta channel, and TV platform store submissions.
  • Validate feature flags and canary rollouts, including geo-based staged releases.
  • Monitor the first 24–48 hours post-release for crash-free rate, playback error rate, and funnel drop-off — and own the rollback recommendation.

Data & instrumentation

  • Validate that GA4 and CleverTap events fire with correct payloads before release. Broken tracking is a silent P1 — you'll own catching it.
  • Use device, OS, and geo distribution data to decide what to test deeply and what to skip.
  • Verify A/B test setups: correct variant assignment, clean event separation, no cross-contamination.

Product partnership

  • Review PRDs and write or challenge acceptance criteria before build starts.
  • Join grooming as the edge-case voice.
  • Coordinate UAT and hold go/no-go sign-off authority on releases.

Automation

  • Contribute to and grow our automated test coverage — we use Maestro for mobile flow automation and Playwright for web — with support and mentorship from Engineering.
  • Write and maintain Maestro flows for core journeys: onboarding, login, playback, and subscription purchase.
  • Use AI tools to speed up test case generation, bug documentation, and repetitive QA work — while personally validating every output before it ships.

Must-Have Qualifications :

  • 2–3 years of hands-on QA experience on a consumer product — ideally OTT, streaming, or another high-traffic app.
  • Strong QA fundamentals: test case design, test plans, bug life cycle, severity triage, and release sign-off.
  • Demonstrated experience testing across multiple platforms and physical devices — web, Android/iOS, and at least one smart TV/CTV platform.
  • Comfort with remote-control-based navigation testing as a discipline distinct from touch or mouse-driven UI testing.
  • API testing via Postman or equivalent.
  • SQL good enough to independently verify data, reconcile counts, and debug an issue without asking Engineering.
  • Working exposure to bug tracking and test management tooling (we use Linear).
  • Clear written communication — you can document a bug so an engineer reproduces it first try, with zero back-and-forth.
  • Default user of AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar) in your daily workflow, with at least one concrete example of AI output you personally verified, corrected, or overrode.

Good to Have :

  • Automation experience with Maestro, Appium, Playwright, or Cypress. Prior Maestro experience is a strong plus.
  • API automation (Postman/Newman, REST Assured).
  • Prior DRM, video player, or CDN-related testing.
  • Experience validating analytics instrumentation (GA4, CleverTap, Mixpanel, Amplitude).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and where QA fits in a shipping workflow.
  • Ability to read Bengali — useful for subtitle, metadata, and UI copy QA.

Why Join hoichoi

You'll be testing a product used by millions of Bengali viewers worldwide — every bug you catch and every release you sign off on has real, visible impact. You'll work in a small, cross-functional team where product, tech, and content sit close together, with direct exposure to how a modern streaming platform is built and shipped. hoichoi is going all-in on becoming AI-native, so you'll build your QA skills alongside real automation and AI tooling from day one, with a clear growth path from manual to automation-led testing.

Culture & How We Work

At hoichoi, the best idea wins, not the biggest title. We operate in small, cross-functional teams that argue productively and ship fast. Ownership isn't a buzzword here; it's the default setting — if something's broken, you fix it rather than filing a ticket and waiting.

We ship fast, measure what works, and iterate. Some releases — particularly TV platform and store submissions — land outside standard hours, and we expect flexibility around those windows. We're equally serious about keeping the pace sustainable the rest of the time.
