Staff Engineer
viamagus
Job Title: Staff Engineer
Location: Bengaluru | Employment Type: Full-Time | Experience: 10-13 Years
Position Summary
Viamagus isn't hiring to fill seats — we're hiring builders who build for other builders. As a Staff Engineer, you'll own one or more core systems end-to-end: architecture to production, not just the code, the whole thing. You'll lead the design of complex, distributed systems, drive engineering operational excellence, and mentor engineers around you — all on a platform processing billions of deliveries at global scale.
What You'll Do
You own core systems end to end — architecture to production. Here's what that looks like day to day:
- Own one or more core systems end-to-end — reliability, performance, scalability. Not just the code. The whole thing.
- Lead the design and architecture of complex, distributed systems, frameworks, and libraries aligned with our client's technical strategy.
- Drive engineering operational excellence — define roadmaps for system reliability, observability, and performance improvements.
- Analyze and optimize existing systems for latency, throughput, and efficiency at scale.
- Work closely with Product, Data, and Infrastructure teams to translate business requirements into technical deliverables.
- Mentor and guide engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous learning.
- Establish and uphold coding standards, conduct design and code reviews, and promote best practices across teams — not just your own.
- Set technical direction that other engineers and teams are expected to follow.
- Contribute to hiring — identify and attract top-tier engineering talent.
What You Bring Must-Haves
- 10-13 years of backend engineering experience, with deep, hands-on expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
- 4-5+ years specifically at a mature product company — not an early-stage startup, and not an IT services/staffing firm working on client-staffed engagements.
- Proven, hands-on ownership of both High-Level Design (HLD) and Low-Level Design (LLD) — you've led architecture decisions, not just implemented designs handed to you.
- Real experience with large-scale, distributed systems — high transaction volume, high concurrency, or systems distributed across many services.
- Hands-on experience with multi-tenant architecture — designing systems that securely serve multiple clients/tenants on shared infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to set technical direction beyond your own team — through architecture reviews, standards you've authored, or cross-team technical leadership.
- Strong CS fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and problem-solving.
- Experience with cloud-native environments (AWS/GCP), CI/CD, and observability tooling.
- Excellent communication skills — able to explain technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- Self-driven and comfortable in ambiguity — you don't wait to be told what needs fixing.
Domain Fit
- Preferred backgrounds: E-commerce, Quick-commerce, B2B SaaS, Logistics & Supply Chain.
- Not a fit: Candidates whose primary domain background is Fintech, Banking, or Financial Services.
- Prior logistics or supply chain domain knowledge is a plus, but not mandatory.
Availability
Immediate joiners or candidates on a maximum 15-day notice period strongly preferred.
Strong Signals — We Actively Look For These
Degrees don't tell us much. These do:
- You've architected something that survived real scale, and you know exactly what broke along the way.
- You've set a technical standard that other teams adopted — not just your own.
- You've built something on your own time — open source, side project, internal tool.
- You've contributed to a top open-source project.
- You've filed a patent or published research.
- You've written technical content others reference, or spoken at a conference.
- You've competed in or completed something grueling — ultra-marathon, Ironman, competitive programming, hackathon wins.
