Workload placement Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Workload Placement Engineer to assess, plan, and optimize the placement of application workloads across private cloud, data center, and hybrid cloud environments. The role involves analyzing application requirements, infrastructure capacity, performance, security, compliance, and cost to determine the most appropriate hosting environment for each workload.
The successful candidate will work closely with application, infrastructure, cloud, network, security, and operations teams to ensure workloads are placed and migrated efficiently while meeting business and technical requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Assess application workloads and determine the appropriate hosting and placement strategy.
Analyze workload requirements including CPU, memory, storage, network, performance, availability, security, and compliance.
Evaluate workloads for placement across private cloud, physical infrastructure, virtualization platforms, and public cloud.
Perform application discovery and dependency analysis before workload placement or migration.
Develop workload placement recommendations based on technical requirements, capacity, performance, risk, and business priorities.
Support workload migration planning, execution, testing, and post-migration validation.
Work with infrastructure teams to ensure adequate compute, storage, network, and platform capacity.
Analyze current infrastructure utilization and identify opportunities for workload consolidation and optimization.
Support VMware / virtualization workload placement and resource optimization.
Collaborate with cloud architects to identify suitable AWS, Azure, or GCP environments where applicable.
Define workload placement rules, standards, and decision criteria.
Maintain workload inventories, application dependency maps, placement records, and migration documentation.
Monitor workload performance after migration and recommend optimization actions.
Identify infrastructure bottlenecks, capacity constraints, compatibility issues, and placement risks.
Support high-availability and disaster-recovery requirements when determining workload placement.
Ensure workload placement complies with security, regulatory, data residency, and organizational policies.
Participate in technical workshops, architecture reviews, migration planning sessions, and operational handovers.
Develop reports and dashboards for workload placement, migration progress, capacity, and infrastructure utilization.
Identify opportunities for automation of workload assessment, placement, and migration activities.
Required Technical Skills
Strong experience in Workload Placement, Infrastructure Engineering, Cloud Engineering, or Data Center Operations.
Good knowledge of VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, or equivalent virtualization technologies.
Strong understanding of compute, memory, storage, network, and virtualization concepts.
Experience with private cloud and hybrid cloud environments.
Knowledge of workload migration and application onboarding processes.
Experience with infrastructure capacity planning and performance analysis.
Understanding of AWS, Azure, or GCP workload placement concepts.
Good knowledge of networking including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, load balancing, routing, and firewalls.
Understanding of storage technologies such as SAN, NAS, NFS, and vSAN.
Knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, high availability, RPO, and RTO.
Experience with monitoring and performance-management tools.
Knowledge of automation tools such as PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or Terraform is an advantage.
Workload Assessment & Placement
Collect and analyze workload characteristics and application dependencies.
Determine workload suitability for physical, virtual, private-cloud, or public-cloud environments.
Analyze resource utilization and identify underutilized or over-provisioned workloads.
Recommend optimal placement based on performance, capacity, security, availability, compliance, and cost.
Identify workload dependencies that could impact migration or placement.
Create workload placement matrices and migration waves.
Validate infrastructure readiness before workload onboarding.
Migration Responsibilities
Support data center to private cloud and private cloud to hybrid-cloud migrations.
Assist with migration discovery, dependency mapping, sizing, scheduling, and cutover planning.
Coordinate with application owners and infrastructure teams during migration activities.
Perform pre- and post-migration validation.
Troubleshoot performance, connectivity, resource, and compatibility issues.
Support workload stabilization and optimization after migration.
Required Experience
5–8+ years of experience in infrastructure, cloud, workload management, virtualization, or data-center environments.
Hands-on experience with enterprise workload assessment and placement.
Experience working with cross-functional infrastructure and application teams.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
Ability to manage multiple workloads, migration waves, and technical priorities.
