Senior Specialist / Manager – Carbon Credits & Environmental Commodities Trading

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Carbon Credits & Environmental Commodities Trading professional to lead trading, portfolio management, transaction execution, pricing, tender management, and commercial deal structuring across Voluntary Carbon Credits (VCCs), Compliance Carbon Credits, and I-RECs.

The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on experience in carbon markets, environmental commodities trading, carbon registries, project developers, corporate buyers, brokers, tender/RFP processes, and carbon credit transactions. The role requires strong commercial acumen, negotiation skills, market intelligence, risk management capabilities, and the ability to work closely with Business Development, Operations, Legal, Risk, and Finance teams.

Key Responsibilities

Carbon Credits Trading & Portfolio Management

• Lead end-to-end trading activities for Voluntary Carbon Credits (VCCs), Compliance Carbon Credits, and I-RECs across domestic and international markets.
• Execute buy/sell transactions, spot trades, forward contracts, off-take agreements, and structured carbon transactions.
• Conduct price discovery, market analysis, deal structuring, and commercial evaluation.
• Manage carbon credit portfolios while monitoring inventory, liquidity, market exposure, delivery schedules, and commercial margins.
• Develop and maintain relationships with carbon brokers, international trading desks, project developers, corporate buyers, and registry accounts.
• Identify new trading opportunities and potential carbon credit supply sources.

Business Development & Commercial Support

• Partner with the Business Development team to structure competitive commercial proposals and client solutions.
• Support client negotiations, pricing discussions, term-sheet preparation, and commercial closure.
• Assist in finalizing ERPA, I-REC supply agreements, purchase agreements, and other carbon transaction contracts.
• Support counterparty onboarding, KYC, credit assessment, and commercial due diligence.
• Participate in client meetings, presentations, industry forums, and market discussions.

Tender & RFP Management

• Monitor and identify relevant government, PSU, corporate, and international carbon procurement tenders/RFPs/EOIs.
• Lead tender analysis, commercial evaluation, bid preparation, and submission.
• Ensure compliance with tender specifications, eligibility criteria, commercial terms, EMD requirements, and technical documentation.
• Coordinate with Legal, Finance, Business Development, and Operations teams to prepare compliant and competitive tender submissions.
• Track tender outcomes, pricing benchmarks, and market opportunities.

Carbon Registry & Operations

• Coordinate with project and operations teams on carbon project registration, credit issuance, volume availability, and delivery schedules.
• Manage credit transfer, retirement, cancellation, and settlement activities across relevant registries.
• Work with platforms such as Verra Registry, Gold Standard Impact Registry, Global Carbon Council (GCC), and I-REC Registry/Evident.
• Ensure smooth handover from trading execution to operations and fulfillment.
• Monitor registry documentation and transaction records.

Finance & Trade Settlement

• Coordinate with Finance and Accounts teams for invoicing, payment realization, trade settlements, margin calculations, and revenue forecasting.
• Maintain accurate trade logs, transaction records, reconciliation statements, and portfolio reports.
• Support financial evaluation of carbon transactions and project portfolios.
• Assist in managing currency exposure, LC, escrow arrangements, and trade finance requirements.
• Coordinate on applicable GST, STT, and cross-border tax considerations related to transactions.

Market Intelligence & Risk Management

• Monitor carbon prices, market benchmarks, trading trends, policy developments, and regulatory changes.
• Track developments related to Article 6, CCTS, CBAM, CORSIA, EU ETS, and voluntary carbon markets.
• Analyze supply-demand dynamics, pricing drivers, project quality, and market liquidity.
• Identify and manage price risk, counterparty risk, credit risk, inventory risk, and delivery risk.
• Develop market insights and recommendations for management and Business Development teams.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field.
• Master's degree / MBA in Finance, Economics, Energy Management, Sustainability, or International Business preferred.
• Certifications in carbon markets, commodities trading, financial risk management, CFA, ERP, or relevant carbon-market programs will be an advantage.

Required Experience & Skills

• 5–6 years of hands-on experience in carbon credits, environmental commodities, carbon trading, or related markets.
• Strong experience in Voluntary Carbon Credits (VCCs), Compliance Carbon Credits, and I-RECs.
• Strong understanding of Verra (VCS), Gold Standard, GCC, Article 6 mechanisms, and I-REC.
• Proven experience in transaction execution, price discovery, portfolio management, trading, and deal structuring.
• Experience with ERPA, I-REC supply agreements, off-take agreements, ISDA, EFET, IETA, or similar commercial contracts.
• Experience in carbon procurement tenders, RFPs, EOIs, bidding, and commercial negotiations.
• Strong knowledge of carbon market regulations and frameworks.
• Experience working with project developers, brokers, corporate buyers, carbon desks, and trading counterparties.
• Strong financial modelling, valuation, pricing, and risk analysis capabilities.
• Advanced proficiency in MS Excel.

Preferred Technical Tools

• Carbon Registries: Verra Registry, Gold Standard Impact Registry, GCC Portal, I-REC Registry / Evident.
• Market Data Platforms: Bloomberg, Refinitiv, Platts, Argus, Quantum Commodity Intelligence.
• Business Tools: Advanced MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, ERP/CRM systems.
• Exposure to ETRM (Energy Trading and Risk Management) platforms will be an advantage.
