Staff Software Engineer

About The Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer who is passionate about building scalable, high-quality software and mentoring engineering teams. This role requires a strong hands-on technologist with deep expertise in Ruby on Rails, experience designing distributed systems, and the ability to lead by example in a fast-growing, high-scale environment.

What You’ll Do

Coach and mentor engineers, helping develop some of the best technical talent in the industry.
Design, develop, test, release, and maintain core components of PAR/Punchh products.
Build high-quality, scalable, and reliable software that is widely adopted by customers.
Architect and scale features to handle 2x–4x annual growth, managing systems with millions of records and terabytes of data.
Play a key role in technical design and architectural decisions, building toward an efficient microservices-based distributed architecture.
Drive best practices around code quality, performance, security, and maintainability.
Take ownership of deliverables and obsess over engineering excellence and craftsmanship.

What You’ll Need

8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Strong hands-on expertise in Ruby on Rails (mandatory).
Excellent design and coding skills in:
Ruby on Rails (must-have)
Golang
Experience with Java, C#, or other backend languages is a plus.
Strong computer science fundamentals, including:
Design Patterns
Data Structures & Algorithms
Operating Systems
Experience working with large-scale data systems, including both relational and NoSQL databases.
Proven ability to solve complex technical problems with a hands-on mindset.
Experience with microservices architecture and platform migration to modern architectures.
Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS or similar), including:
Cost optimization
Multi-region deployments
Solid understanding of web technologies, including:
HTTP lifecycle
REST APIs (hands-on)
Caching strategies
Messaging technologies
API security
Experience building and scaling large, performant enterprise applications.
Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
